River Medway Towpath Scheme
Towpath gets overhaul to improve access to Maidstone town centre
Maidstone Council has pledged £500,000 towards a redesigned towpath along the River Medway, having successfully bid for £2m from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.
The project will upgrade the current Medway path Right of Way into a Cycle Path, acting as a route for sustainable access to employment in Maidstone. The 8.8km path runs from Allington Lock to Barming Bridge, linking residential areas with town centre and industrial sites.
In addition there will be ecological works along the length, together with interpretation boards. The project team is also looking at ensuring the project links with key sites e.g. Cobtree Manor Park and the Loose Greenway (currently under construction).
The scheme will also deliver a new cycling hub created at the Lockmeadow complex in the town centre, including cycle parking, a tyre pump, and an information map of the route and area.
Construction work starts Autumn 2016. Information about towpath closures can be found here.
