Kent’s first ODEON Luxe opens at Lockmeadow

16 Oct 2020

Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) welcomes Kent’s first ODEON Luxe which has opened its doors at Lockmeadow Entertainment Centre today Friday 16 October.

Following six months of closure during lockdown, ODEON – the UK and Ireland’s largest cinema chain – is set to launch the newly refurbished ODEON Luxe Maidstone, becoming the latest cinema in the Group to receive an impressive transformation.

ODEON Luxe Maidstone will feature 615 brand new, handmade recliner seats across 8 refurbished screens, including a brand new, cutting-edge iSense screen boasting ODEON’s clearest sound and brightest picture. The new reclining seating will provide guests with triple the legroom and increased personal space, for a viewing experience that is described as second to none.

Cinema-goers will be able to enjoy the full Luxe experience in a safer environment as the new ODEON safer cinema experience has been carefully designed to meet government guidelines and to give ODEON guests and colleagues confidence and reassurance.

MBC secured the head lease of the Lockmeadow complex in November 2019 to allow the Council to actively manage the centre in a bid to make it a key destination for leisure activities in the town centre and to support one of its strategic priorities to make Maidstone a Thriving Place.

Cllr Paul Harper Chair of the Maidstone Borough Council Economic Regeneration and Leisure Committee said: “The Council is delighted to see the ODEON cinema reopen as the Luxe brand and are pleased that is being brought to the Lockmeadow complex.  Now the Council owns Lockmeadow, we are looking to help revamp it and to use it as a facility to help regenerate the entertainment, cultural, leisure and hospitality sectors.  Future plans are going to the Economic Regeneration and Leisure Committee on the 20th October.

“Now, more than ever, we need to support our local businesses where we can in such unprecedented times. We are really pleased that ODEON Luxe has continued to launch under such challenges when others have had to temporarily close their doors. The new Luxe brand lends itself well to social-distancing and safety – I can’t wait to visit for myself.”

Maidstone Borough Council has already started improvement work to refresh the Lockmeadow Leisure Centre to help attract and retain tenants, and to make the complex an attractive and compelling destination for residents and visitors.

Maidstone Borough Council’s Leader, Cllr Martin Cox added: “We hope that our residents will enjoy a safe, yet luxurious experience at their new local cinema and feel it is worth the wait.

“For Maidstone to be the only town in Kent with the ODEON Luxe brand is something for the County Town to be proud of in challenging times.”

Featured within the new ODEON Luxe is an immersive ODEON iSense screen. Measuring 15 metres in width and taller than a double decker bus, iSense boasts ODEON’s clearest sounds and brightest picture, culminating in the best big screen experience. In-screen lighting technology minimises distractions to provide a truly undisturbed cinematic immersion.

Maidstone General Manager, Ania Karnas said: “We are delighted to upgrade ODEON Maidstone to a Luxe cinema, bringing the premium experience to Maidstone film fans as they return to the big screen. We are looking forward to welcoming the local community through our doors and have introduced comprehensive new measures to deliver a safer cinema experience for all.”
