M20 Junctions 3 to 5 Smart Motorway Project

30 Apr 2018

Smart motorways reduce congestion and improve journey time reliability by making the hard shoulder available as a traffic lane, and use variable speed limits to smooth traffic flow. They also add much needed capacity to some of the most congested parts of our network and support economic growth.

Highways England are improving the busy 10.5km (6.5 mile) stretch of the M20 between junction 3, near West Malling, and junction 5, near Aylesford, by upgrading it to an all lane running (ALR) smart motorway. This means there will be an additional lane for traffic increasing the capacity to reduce congestion, more technology on the road to manage incidents and more reliable journeys.

Construction started in March 2018 with works to be completed in March 2020.

Smart motorways are a technology driven approach to the use of our motorways, increasing capacity and relieving congestion while maintaining safety. They include; emergency roadside telephones, emergency areas, variable mandatory speed limits, all lane running and congestion monitoring technology.

You can find out more about the plans for junctions 3 to 5 at the Public Information Exhibitions, please see below for venue information. Highways England and design and construction consultants will be available to discuss the scheme and answer your questions.
