The ladies of Maidstone Borough Council have been recognising International Women’s Day (IWD).
Reflecting on the global event which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women were the Mayor of Maidstone - Cllr Marion Ring, Deputy Mayor - Cllr Fay Gooch.
The Mayor who has a long and distinguished record working within the public sector, was first elected to MBC in 2003 and has since held various cabinet posts said: “Women can be ‘business’ women as they are made to multi-task doing 100 things at once! When asked did anything or anyone inspire you career wise? Cllr Ring added: “Winston Churchill along with the Kent County Council and Cabinet Member Eric Hotson.”
The first International Women’s Day gathering took place in 1911 and was supported by over a million people. The 2020 campaign theme is #EachforEqual, focusing on how individually, people are responsible for their own thoughts and actions - all day, every day.
Referring to equality Cllr Gooch, Deputy Leader of MBC and Leader of the Independent Group was asked: ”What does being part of the Council mean to you: “It gives me an opportunity to serve my ward and the community as well as helping to bring people together who have different views and listen to them, to help make the best decisions.”
Both ladies were then asked if there were any words of advice they would give to people starting their careers, the Mayor replied: “Take every opportunity offered to you and make the most of it, it is there for the taking,” and Cllr Gooch added: “To do your best and enjoy your work.”
