Borough’s leisure offer scaling new heights as Maidstone welcomes The Climbing Experience

Maidstone’s leisure offer will be significantly boosted when Kent’s first multi-discipline indoor climbing centre and leisure facility opens in the town centre this summer.

"Over the last year we have really seen Maidstone’s offer grow. Maidstone Borough Council has been instrumental in turning the town into an attractive place to work for both start-ups and established businesses looking to relocate, helping to increase opportunities and boost business all round."

Offering a variety of climbing and fitness activities, and able to cater for over 350 climbers, The Climbing Experience will shortly open on St Peter’s Street, within easy walking distance of the town centre and local railway stations.

The £750,000 state-of-the-art leisure facility will cater for all ages and levels of experience, offering themed ‘fun wall’ climbing, a 30m competition wall and 12m traverse wall, in total 700 square meters of bouldering. The new centre will also include a yoga studio, fitness training facilities, a soft play area and café.

The Climbing Experience is run by Ed Neil and Robert Woods (pictured L-R above). Robert Woods commented: “Maidstone is Kent’s county town and it is growing all the time. Situated in the heart of Kent, Maidstone has excellent transport links, being close to the M20 and with good rail connections. Our research shows that climbers will travel up to an hour for the right facility, so Maidstone is a logical choice as it is well-placed for customers from Kent and South East London as well as Surrey, Essex and East Sussex.

Maidstone also has an abundance of our key target audiences, including large numbers of school children, students and young professionals looking for a challenging, healthy activity they can pursue with friends. The town was our first choice when we were planning The Climbing Experience and we were encouraged by the Council’s progressive, pro-business outlook, which is keen to support commercial developments like ours. We’ve also benefited from free business support from advisors at Let's Do Business based at The Business Terrace.

“With climbing set to feature in the 2020 Olympics for the first time in the Games’ history, the sport is growing in popularity and will continue to do so. The Climbing Experience provides people of all ages and abilities with a range of climbing challenges and access to fantastic facilities that are a match for some of the best climbing centres in the country.”
